Bowed or faning out of brick
When water works its way into the wall or chimney. It can settle between the first coarse of brick and interior coarse or wall or flue which can freeze and expand causing this problem.
Depending on type of brick and aging of, or type of joint, over time it will start to allow moisture to penetrate. This in turn will freeze and expand, causing the outer surface of the brick to spall, pop off.
The only way to correct this problem is to remove existing coarse and rebuild or replace the damaged area with new to match the existing as close as possible. |
